Training and exercise

Every animal requires exercise. The Couch Potato and sedentary life style is not for our pets! The length and type of exercise depends on your pet. Every dog should get walked at least twice daily for approx 10-20 mins. Playing with balls is fine as long as the ball is not too small or too heavy. Never play with sticks as these can cause all sorts of injuries. Try not to allow the dog to jump up on its hind legs to catch the ball as it damage ligaments in its knees and hips.
Also don’t exercise excessively in very warm weather as animals have poor body cooling systems – black dogs and the short nosed breeds suffering the most.An animal’s socialisation period is approximately between 8 and 12 weeks of age. During this time period it is necessary to allow your pet to experience as many sights, sounds and smells as possible. This is the best time for training – whether it is on a lead or toilet training. One of our nurses runs a dog training clinic. So, if you have any behavioural issues or need some training tips or want to attend the classes, ask at reception.
